Speech Pathologist Ami Kwong was recently thrilled to gain approval for one of her NDIS participants for a piece of Assistive Technology (AT) called the TheraBite® Jaw Motion Rehabilitation System™. By improving active ROM in the mouth/ jaw, this equipment should restore jaw mobility, which should help Ami’s client improve many aspects of her quality of life – yet costs $500. A piece of equipment which should help her client improve many aspects of her quality of life – yet costs $500 .
This piece of equipment will allow this participant the ability to take control of some their own rehabilitation at home, to overcome significant limitations due to a restriction in mouth opening (Trismus). Trismus can be caused by infection, trauma surgery, radiation surgery or radiation. This client only had a mouth opening of 25mm – whereas 35-40mm would be considered a normal functional opening.

Trismus affects many aspects of daily life, such as chewing, diet normalcy, overall quality of life, difficulty eating, pain, altered facial appearance, speech difficulties, inability to practice effective oral hygiene, and inability to receive proper dental care.
Ami will continue to monitor the progress of the rehabilitation program, along with the client’s condition and modify the program accordingly. Reassessment of swallowing function and diet upgrade recommendations will be provided as required. Ami is thrilled that the time spent assessing, researching and putting this report together for her client has resulted in this approval via the NDIS. Over time, we are looking forward to hearing how this program has helped improve many aspects of this client’s quality of life.
