Client-Centric Care for People Living with Dementia

Maintaining a client-centric approach is at the heart of how we care for people living with dementia.

As part of Dementia Action Week, we’re highlighting the importance of seeing the person beyond the diagnosis, understanding who they are now, and appreciating who they were earlier in life.

By embracing their unique stories, we create meaningful connections that enhance well-being and increase participation in therapeutic activities.

Understanding the Client’s Past and Present.

To truly remain client-centric, we delve into our client’s history and interests, tailoring care to their individual experiences:

  • Employment: A person’s profession often plays a significant role in their identity. Whether they are a teacher, engineer, or artist, engaging them in activities that echo their professional background can reignite a sense of purpose and familiarity.
  • Hobbies and Interests: Reintroducing hobbies the client once enjoyed, even if adapted to their current abilities, can spark joy. Whether gardening, knitting, or puzzles, these activities create moments of connection and engagement.
  • Family Connections: Understanding the client’s family relationships helps foster a comforting environment. Printing out and sharing photos of loved ones or discussing family history can be a powerful way to maintain that emotional link.
  • Strengths: Every individual, regardless of their condition, retains strengths. Identifying and building on what a person can do fosters a sense of accomplishment and dignity.
  • Art, Music, and Movement: Activities like drawing, listening to music, or gentle physical exercises can be therapeutic. Tailoring these activities to the client’s preferences and abilities makes them not only enjoyable but also empowering.

Collaborative Care with an Allied Health Team.

Client-centric care requires teamwork. At Recovery Station, we work closely with our allied health team—occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech pathologists, and other specialists. Regular communication, team meetings, and strategy alignment ensure that our care remains focused on the client’s individual needs and goals.

By working together, especially during Dementia Action Week, we enhance the support provided to the client, ensuring their mental, physical, and emotional well-being is nurtured.

Acknowledging the Person Behind the Condition.

During Dementia Action Week, we reaffirm the importance of acknowledging the person behind the condition. By honouring their past and meeting them where they are today, we create an engaging, supportive environment that enhances their quality of life.

Through this approach, we ensure that dementia care is not just about managing symptoms but about helping individuals thrive with dignity, joy, and a sense of fulfilment.

At Recovery Station, our experienced clinicians help clients with mild to complex symptoms of Dementia. To learn more about how we can support clients living with dementia, please call 1300 588 851.
